On 3 July 1930, George Fernandes was born in Mangaluru city. Because his mother was a huge fan of King George, so his name was also kept George.
George Fernandes was the eldest of his 6 brothers. He completed his 12th in St. Aloisons College, Mangaluru.
And then at the age of 19 years , in the cold of 1949, George went to Mumbai in search of work. Sleeping on a bench of in Chaupaati at the night, many times the police would chase him away. In Mumbai, at the age of 19, he got a job of a proof reader in a newspaper . Joined the Social workers movement in Mumbai and came in contact with Ram Manohar Lohia.
He came to be known as the leader of the Taxi Union of Mumbai.

From 1950 to 1960, led several strikes. In 1961, he became a member of Bombay Municipal Corporation after winning the election.
In 1967, got a ticket of South Mumbai from the United Socialist Party in the Lok Sabha elections. He defeated Congress leader Sarsiv Kanoji Patil with a great margin, which led to him being called “George the Giant Killer”.
Since independence and even after the introduction of the three pay commission, there was no significant increase in the salary of railway employees, in the meantime George became president of All India Railway Man’s Federation in November 1973. George began a strike in Mumbai on May 8, 1974, and the people of the Tax Union, the Electricity Union and the Transport Union, also joined the strike, this all was only because of his influence.
In 1971,met Laila Kabir and married her on 22 July 1971.
When the Emergency came into effect in 1975, George accepted it as challenge and faced it.
George assumed the post of minister in the government of Morarji Desai in 1977. As a minister he ordered Coca-Cola and IBM company to go back to the US.
In the 80’s, Laila got out of her life and was replaced by Jaya Jaitley, wife of businessman Arun Jaitley.
He served as minister in many coalition government. In 1990, he was appointed as a minister in the government of VP Singh . He was a great supporter of Tibet’s independence. Was a minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from 1998 to 2004, he said that India’s number one enemy is China and then Pakistan, but Atal ji denied it.
When the defense scandal came in 2001, he resigned from his post.

Jaya Jaitley stayed with George until 2009. Around 2009, George’s health began to worsen. In 2010, Laila once again reached George’s house with her son Sushanto at Krishna Menon Marg. Jaya Jaitley’s entry in house stopped now , Since then, Laila had taken care of George.
Finally, on January 29, 2019, George Fernandes leaving his deep impression on India’s politics, went away from this world.
He really emerged as the unbridled rebel leader of Indian politics.

  • He was trained in 10 languages that included Kannada, Marathi, Hindi, English, Tamil, Urdu, Malayali, Tulu, Konkani, and Latin.
  • George called for many closures in his time. 1958 Mumbai closure, 1966 Maharashtra closure.
  • During the Emergency he used to roam in a disguised form so that no one recognises him
  • On June 10, 1976, George was arrested from Kolkata with dynamite.
  • In 1986, he became the Railway Minister in the Government of Vishvanath Pratap Singh and started work on the Konkan Railway Project.
